Here's an older track I never got around to posting on this blog. This was actually one of my first remix projects from a couple years ago. A handful of DJ's got this back in the day and now I feel it's only right to give it a new life with all DJ's since then that I've met that have been supporting my music. This is some straight Deep African House Music from the heart of Mali, enjoy!

About Sali Sidibé:

Sali Sidibé is another exponent of wassoulou style of music, predominantly performed by female singers from the South of Mali. In the footsteps of the pioneers Kagbe Sidibé and Coumba Sidibé, Sali became one of the most popular Wassoulou singers in Mali.

Her music is somewhat different from that of Oumou Sangaré, but more similar to the style of Nahawa Doumbia since she is using the same didadi rhythm.

Unlike the malinké praise singers, these young artists addressed contemporary issues in their lyrics, such as social problems. Although the singers are mainly Peul they are singing in the wassoulou dialect of the bambara language.

The pentatonic wassoulou music itself is very distinct from malinke music and is reminiscent of the rhythms of Malian hunter music played with the Dozon N'Goni (hunter's lute), but using instead the smaller Kamelen N'Goni (6-string youth lute). Other instruments used are the traditional one-string violon, the soukou, the M'Bolon (bass lute), senoufo balafon, djembé and and also the electric guitar. The rhythms are repetitive and hypnotising, but there is room for improvisation on the string instruments.

As Celia would say "Azucar!!" And yes I definitely have something "sweet" for all of you today.

Although Celia is known as the queen of Salsa, this is NOT some cheesy Salsa-House remake of one of her songs. In the this track, Celia digs deep into her roots and sings to the Orisha (spirit/deity) of Elegua in the native Yoruba language of West Africa. The result is something deep, mysterious, and definitely spiritual.

Listen to it, absorb it and get lost in the rhythm!

Where has all the love gone?

So while going through my music I realized I haven't made a nice "soulful" mix in a while, and with Valentine's Day around the corner I thought this would be perfect...but don't expect this mix to get you laid, lol!

I decided to call this mix "Where has all the love gone" cause while searching for tracks, I realized I didn't have as much new soulful housemusic as I used to. In this day and age where anyone can make music on a computer (including myself, haha) quantity has won over quality and I find myself buying less and less of the good stuff.

But not to fear, there are still many Housemusic SOULdiers out there making meaningful music and this mix is a testament of that. Expect nothing but Deep, Sensual and Vocal goodness on this one!!

Femi Kuti - You Better Ask Yourself (Jose Marquez Remix)

Femi Kuti is the oldest son of legendary afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. If you didn't know this, then "you better ask yourself!" Ha!

The original version on this track appears on Femi's full length album "Day by Day" which I highly recommend. In this remix I bumped it up on notch, making it the perfect type of track for DJ's to transition from Afrobeat to House or vise versa.

So I'm listening to this dope album by Afronaut and diggin' all the tracks. As I'm listening to "Nuevo Rumbera" I'm thinking (1) this track needs to be longer (2) if it had a house beat/feel to it , I think more people would dig it. Don't get me wrong, I love the raw percussive sounds of a rumba, but it doesn't work at every party

(except Inspiration, lol!) and not everyone can get lost solely in the drums (really!?)

So I made this fun & funky little remix for all you DJ's to test out on your dance floors. I gotta be honest though, I wasn't diggin' it at first. This has actually been locked up my hard drive's basement for a while. But after some good feedback from some DJ's and listening to it more, this sucker grew on me. And besides, the whole purpose of this blogsite is share music that I'm feeling & making.... right? So here ya go, enjoy!

When I first heard Oumou's music it was over! I instantly fell in love with her voice despite the fact that I have no clue what the heck she's saying!

I felt the need to share her music. But convincing people to check out some new Wassoulou music that descended from traditional hunting songs in Mali would be rather difficult, don't you agree??

So I decided to mess around and give one of her songs "the house treatment" I can't tell you how many great artists I've discovered through housemusic remixes over the years... I'm sure I'm not alone on this one.

Oumou Sangare is Mali's great diva, and one of the world's most astounding female voices. Her idiom is the hauntingly beautiful and hypnotically rhythmic home-grown music that has become her trademark: wassoulou.

Oumou Sangaré is considered an ambassador of Wassoulou, a historic & remote forest region south of the Niger River. She writes and composes her songs, which forcefully support social criticism, especially concerning the place of women and their low position in society.
